Description
After the first full moon in late May when the chance of frost has passed, Mackinac Island is transformed into an artist's canvas as gardeners paint the landscape using a palette of flowering plants.
Abundantly awash with blooms that will last a mere 15 weeks, the Island's transformation is a labor of love, say the gardeners. From tiny flower boxes at summer cottages to large gardens at Island hotels, the visual prize is months in the planning, lessons in logistics, and just get-on-your-knees and get-in-the-dirt hard work.
Since the mid-1990s, beautiful gardens have grown in popularity among visitors and residents. Gardening has become a showcase and the flowers color the city streets.
